Guam Day 95/96/97 - Memorial Day Weekend
5/30/2022 - As I have spoke about in the past, the weekends just go all too quick. I find that there is more focus on living out the time vs. documenting, a bit of a paradox with also keeping up a blog. Memorial Day weekend was like so many before, the time evaporated as we just enjoyed the life on Guam.
Saturday, Joan's work had their annual summer party at a place called Jeff's Pirates Cove. As this place sounds, it is a restaurant setup in a complete pirate theme overlooking the east side of the island, in a cove if you will. It was a great chance to meet some of Joan's co workers and families, the focus on the family piece really shown through. Lots of kids around, fun pirate costumes, and games that were just for the kids. There were games for the grownups too, Joan and I participated in the 3 legged race and came in a close 2nd for our age group. My learning here was tighter on the string around your feed is not better, lol. We were more reactive to the pain of the string that tied us together, than our communication strategy. We also got the chance to cheer on some of our close friends in Volleyball as they played in the final against the parole roll team. The judiciary is really big into their sand volleyball games! Great view once again, a bit different than any pics I normally post. The east side of the island is much more rocky and had less public area to capture photos.
Sunday morning we were up early for another round of south side bicycling. We both were happily surprised by the fact it was easier than the previous couple times. We are getting stronger at the hills and I must give it to Joan, the earlier we go the better our outcome, less heat. Don't tell her, but the 5 am wake up time to be ready by 7am to bike is really the right move for this ride. The hills were way less menacing, maybe its because we know the route and what we are in for, or like I said we just are getting stronger. We still had energy in the afternoon, so we put the paddle board in at the Tumor beach and enjoyed some more time on the water. And to close out the day, we grabbed some sushi at a new place. As the pics show, we were really excited for this place, the owner was said to have come from Japan and this was one of the more traditional Japanese food places on the island. The food was very good, a couple of sushi rolls, udon soup, and some gyoza. Our chopstick skills are also improving, as you can see this really is a must with the small plates and small table. Very elegant dining setup, we really enjoyed the immersion that was felt with how the restaurant was decorated and setup. We've never been to Japan, but this is what I would expect for a sushi parlor. Almost forgot, the image of the Westin was on our way to the restaurant, fun sunset colors once again.
Monday, Joan had some catch up to do before the week and I got the chance to hang with the guys playing some golf. This is where I am lacking photos. One thing I did want to talk about that is Memorial Day specific was the display at Asan Beach for the veterans lost during WWII. We briefly drove past on Saturday but what we could see from a distance was really neat. The national park service every year setups up 3300 flags, both Guam and USA, to represent the fallen soldiers and Chamorro people during the liberation of the island. Even just driving by, it was really interesting to see what so many flags looked like in this big open field, its hard to really image what that number looks like in your head. Very cool tribute, and we are very thankful for all those that served for our freedom both here on Guam and in the USA.
We hope each of you had a great Memorial Day weekend.
Am truly thankful for those who gave their lives for what we have today. And also for those who have carried their sacrifices with them as they returned to their homes after their service. I laughed at the Pirates Cove Name, for that is were we go to play putt-putt at Okoboji. 🥰 The picture of the sunset was cool. Is that a few potholes on the ground? Hmmm 🤔 Dinner sounded wonderful. Enjoy those rides.
