Guam Day 38: Visit to University of Guam
3/22/2022 - After dropping Joan off at work, I was excited to get out an about and see something new. Growing up, often on vacation, my family would stop at universities at whatever city or place we were in. Part of this was prep for college, and now later in life I just enjoy seeing new places, the architecture is always interesting and it reminds me a bit of my college days too. University of Guam (UoG) is positioned on the east side of the island, just south of where Joan and I did some hiking a few weeks back. This part of the island is much steeper as the you approach the shore. UoG sits at the top of the hill overlooking the ocean just half a mile or so away (image 2). Like everything here on Guam, the campus was very green and lush, fun to see palm trees on a campus, its just not something that fits my mental model.
UoG was very quiet this morning, I wonder if I was hitting spring break or Covid protocols are still in place for optimizing virtual learning. Also, based on what I have read the school is quite small at 3k students, still on a good day I would think the amount of people in one area would stand out more than it did. My squinty eyed first photo shows one of the entrance signs, one either side sit latte stones. These stones for the Chamorros were a sign of wealth and prosperity, the larger the stone the higher in the class system you sat. Latte stones are all over the island today, and image four shows one of the larger stones I have yet seen. Maybe the proximity of the business college has something to do with it (image 3).
The last photo is a a mural that UoG just put up to celebrate their 70th anniversary. I really like the colors and graphic they used, so an image grab was needed.
A much needed break from being at home for the morning. I am finding the island is starting to get smaller and smaller the more I learn. Figuring out how to best use my time here is still in the back of my mind. Maybe volunteering is still in order, or maybe some online corsera work, visiting a university always brings back that want to keep growing / learning. Some more thinking to be done.

You should visit Michelle and my alma mater, ONU in Ada Ohio. 😉 Sounds like volunteer time would be very beneficial.
