Guam Day 14: Spam + Cham pong Time
Retroactively Posted on 3/2/2022
2/26/2022 - I think the big news today is Joan got me to try Spam. This ham block stored in a can, now shipped 7500 miles, has been something that I have avoided for some time. (The 7500 milles really doesn't change my avoidance, Joan just said in my ear that's a poor argument. haha) Joan on the other hand loves the stuff and had tried all 10 flavors. (Im not sure that's how many they have, we see 6 - 7 in the stores) So if you fry the Spam thinly in a pan, it is edible and not too bad in taste. Still not convinced that this will be a staple for me on Guam, as it is for some people, but if I was stranded on a dessert island and had to survive on the stuff.... you get the idea.
These blogs are slowly becoming food and supping, I mean that is what we do here: eat, sup, run, eat good food, and sleep. What more to life do you need the readers might ask? Well I am so glad you asked, one of my favorite driving activities on the island has been spotting fun unique cars of Guam. A new weekly article called COGS: Cars of Guam will start this coming week, just another look at what life here on Guam is, through the lens of the gear head in me. Stay "tuned"!
Ok, public service announcement over, back to the food.
Winnifred wanted to hang out again on Saturday night, if you haven't figured out this is a Pen name yet, let me reassure you it is. Winnifred is always game to try new places and new cuisine, I mean that is one of the many reasons we love hanging out! Joan has spotted this place called Champong time down in Tumon ever since day one of arrival. I was really hoping they would serve champagne, that was a serious shock as I opened the menu. This fun little restaurant is a Korean chain that sells high quality Korean dishes with a limited menu. When I said earlier I opened the menu, that was a mistake in my writing, the menu is one page front and back. Lots of unique things that I had never seen before, plenty of seafood, new sauces, and new characters on the page that I had no idea what they meant. I went conservative this time, fried rice with a black bean sauce, knowing that I had already pushed the envelope with the Spam in the morning. Joan on the other hand got a noodle bowl with seafood, it was really good. The new flavors were exquisite. Lastly you see Winnifred holding a bottle of Korean rice wine, another new thing to try, this was very fruity but yet milky with the rice being a main component.
Officially its been two weeks since we landed, wow, the time really flies.
Congrats on your 2 weeks! I remember Spam from when I was much younger. Since we had it on camping trips when it was fried or grilled it wasn't bad. Haven't had it since. Hmmm. Not hating Joan 😉 Look forward to the COGS! Cool.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be trying a recipe for Korean fried "chicken" next week, substituting chickpeas for the chicken! I'll let you know if it's a good one and then pass along the link!
