Guam Day 80 - Halfway + Things to Look Forward to

5/3/2022 - I really can't believe that Joan and I are coming up on the halfway point of our journey, well I should say, my journey here as she is at the 3/4 mark. We have been reflecting a lot on this trip, and looking through the posts we have highlighted so many great parts of Guam. As we make the turn, and start thinking about planning for back home, I do want to capture on some of the things I / we are looking forward to back in Michigan. There is some great humor to be unlocked, and I want to show the parts of Guam life that also are not perfect, or leave something to be desired, even on paradise.

So, this week the thing I am looking forward to a future apartment or house that has an electrical box that allows us to do more than one or two things at a time. To give some perspective of what 150 amps gives us, or at least the supporting circuit breakers, we have a number of scenarios to discuss:

1. Joan and I get the option of either running the washer and dryer to do our 3x weekly laundry, or we can run one A/C box in one room. Yes, we have to do laundry here 3x a week, for just the two of us, because we sweat so much in this feels like temperature of close to 105 degrees. Also, the dryer is really the only way to get clothes truly dry, as the outside humidity is a constant 80%, hanging them up results in an average at best moistness, that makes no one happy. We end up sweating out the clothes we are wearing just to dry the fresh ones, and the cycle continues ad nauseum.

2. When we both work at home, we get the choice of running one of two A/C boxes we have in the house, either the kitchen, or the bedroom. Can you image a newly married couple having to fight over who this week gets to sit in the A/C room? I always do of course as my initials are AC. Sadly such argument doesn't work with my lovely lawyer.  ;)

3. We get the choice of having a warm water shower, or running the toaster oven in the mornings, all while having one A/C box on in the kitchen area. Making breakfast while one person is showering is a bit of a no no as you can imagine, toast at a minimum. Having to reset the breaker mid shower and then rewarm the shower is a process that is all too familiar, many mornings resulting in a cold wake up.

4. On a very warm day, when we are doing laundry, there is always a little bit of concern if the freezer is getting enough power. Maybe this is just the temperature difference between tropical and Ice, either way this tiny little fridge, that is maybe a bit larger than what is offered to American college students during move in, just barely keeps up.

Please take each of these in a humorous tone, these aren't meant to be complaints, the benefits of living on a tropical island totally outweighs the re-engineering of our electrical system, for now at least. I do look forward to mainland life though where I know the A/C will run at the same time the dryer is going, if not for peace of mind, at least marital bliss.

  1. Already half way? Man does time fly by. From my old man perspective, the one HUGE blessing by living with such unique restrictions is that you both will get to learn what type of living arrangement you both would truly need. It is like those who purchase their first house, then live in it and discover what the truly need. Hugs to you both.

  2. Those are interesting restrictions, 🤔, but I'm sure your creativity and engineering will win! If not, a swim in the ocean might cool you off! 😎 Seriously, I'd be thankful for any electricity!
