Guam Day 58 - The Cargo Container
4/11/2022 - I thought this would be of interest to our readers, a unique bit of island life that is up and coming on Guam. One of the items that is very prevalent around here is shipping containers, everything that arrives on the island, by boat, comes in a shipping container. What do you do with an over abundant supply of one item? You get creative! Just down the road about 3 miles is a company that is taking these shipping crates and turning them into what you see here, a livable tiny home that is 30ft x 10ft. They must be doing a good business as the number of finished crates are piling up, along with delivery equipment on the side of the road.
Arsenio has been prepping over the last few weeks for this cargo container to arrive. The awnings for the car port were pulled down so we now have way more open space to see that blue sky. Next he purchased 4 concrete blocks, a bunch of concrete, rebar and some angle iron for the footings. I enjoyed watching him work on these footings, the soil is so very red but only down to 18 inches or so where you hit this white rock, we were told it was coral. A week was spent with setting up guide wires, digging perfect sized squares and leveling the blocks. Then the concrete and rebar came in to solidify the blocks in place and set just in time for the delivery.
The coolest part of all this was the delivery of the actual container. Joan and I were out running some errands and we left where there were 4 footings and blank space. We came back and there was a full sized crate just sitting in place all ready to go. It must have been a 4 or 5 hour window, poof and there it was ready to go.
There is plenty of work to come, Arsenio is planning on putting in plumbing, electrical, and setting up the interior as a future rental place. We will see if this place lives upto the tiny house we have.
Cool. This was what my son did down south. Small world.
