Guam Day 45 - Joan's Bday

 











3/29/2022 - Today was Joans Birthday, Celebrating 29 again this year. I like this idea that you can celebrate 29 multiple years in a row and everybody understands the joke. This year I worked really hard to pull together a surprise bday by going out to dinner with her friends and then having champagne + cake. My poker face is just not good enough for a week and a half planning session, also coming up with excuses on why we must go out to eat and celebrate on your birthday night is just tough. So, not a perfect surprise, the cat got out, so to speak when my phone was being blown up by text messages the day or so before. My poker face isn't normally good, but when you add in we live in the tiny house and you know every-time each others phone goes off, this becomes harder to keep secrets. My friend network is very tied to Joan too here on the island, so its not like I can say so and so is texting me and leave it at that. 

For dinner we went out to a place called Joinus, a Hibachi / Teppanyaki style grill. Im sure many of you have tried such a place, you know the one where they cook the food in front you on a grille, ensure the food flames up, and the cook puts on a show as they cut up everything. Its a ton of fun, and knowing your close friends are all seated around you makes it extra special. The best part though, was when the entire cooking staff came out and sang to Joan for her birthday, not once but twice. They said "again-again" and we knew we were in for round II of happy birthday to you. 

For the second half of the surprise, we were invited over to Winifred's house for dessert. This was all pre setup, I had bought cupcakes and champagne, and Winifred decorated at her place. Joan was really surprise and happy, as you can see from the second to last photo. Even the pups at Winifreds house were ready to dog pile on. So here is to Joan, another great year to come, and lots to celebrate from here on the island.

  Posted Retroactively - 3/3/2022  2/28/2022 - The main item on the day was to get out of the tiny house and do some chores. Its been a weird time of wait and see with all that is happening with the fam. Hard questions too with do we travel back to the states in this time, or send myself. Anyways, Monday started with going to the grocery store and getting things to make dinner, I must have spent a good hour at the Payless still getting my feet wet with all there is to offer. Joan and I love good Mexican food, this comes from many nights at the Campau's having tostadas, Joans family being from Mexico, and I still think my native Texas birth place has an effect too. So tostadas it was for dinner. For our readers that don't know what a tostada is, think of a flat hardshell taco with all standard taco ingredients. Guam Day 17: A Japanese Ramen Spot

 Retroactively Posted on 3/3/2022 As you can see this week, many of my posts have been retroactive. My Gma passed on 3/1, Guam time, and I am struggling a bit with finding the energy to keep up the blog, as well as other day to day things. Its always tough to lose a loved one, even though this is how life works. Joan and I will be staying on the island and finding ways for us to celebrate her life, she would and is very proud that we are so adventurous and traveling in ways she and my grandfather did some 60 years back.  A little back story: My grandfather was in the Airforce which included assignments in Okinawa, the Philippines, along with work all over the Vietnam area during the conflict. Grandma traveled by his side during every move. She was amazing supporting the kids, eventually 4 of them, while being halfway around the world. I have been so excited to put together this segment that we have craftily named Car(s) of Guam (COGS). One of the areas that I find fascinating is how both people and things are moved to and around the island.
