Guam Day 6 - Adam gets to turn a wrench
2/18/2022 - Another warm and beautiful day on Guam, Friday started out as any other in the week with 85 degree temps, full sun and the smell of salty seashore in the air. I had enough things to accomplish back at the tiny house so I let Joan take the car in to work, this meant I could sleep in, so I thought. 5 mins after I said have a good day at work, my phone rings with a panicked Joan on the other side saying she has had a flat tire. My response was no biggie, drive it back since you are close and we will put the spare on. Joan reminded me that this why she married me, for my mechanical skills in times of dire need.
I was happy to finally get to use my wrench turning knowledge on an automotive product. It is great thanks to Joan that she said no to a wrench kit last week at the market, otherwise the Mazda would have been a part days back getting "upgrades". Joan got back and straight away I headed to the trunk to pull out the spare, the lug wrench and the screw jack. This was a nice reminder to me that a screw jack is really only to be used in emergency circumstances, it is slow and on non concrete floors it is a bit precarious. The lugs were loosened, the car lifted and in a matter of about 5 mins the spare was on ready to go. I was happy to see the tire had a screw in the tread that could be easily repaired, buying a new tire I thought to myself would be expensive on the island.
The next step was to find a good place to get the work done. Arseno, the dad from our host family - which deserves a post of its own, just got back from an errand and guided me to Pacific Tyre in Dededo. He said, he had good luck at this place and would highly recommend, just down the road in Dededo. I was warmly greeted with Hafa Adai at Pacific Tyre, and they clerk said it would be 40 mins and $15 dollars. This place ran like a well oiled machine, I was asked to move the car into the garage about 25 mins later (Covid protocol was I move the car) and with in 10 mins the repair was complete. So, if you ever find yourself in Guam with a flat tire and need a place to fix it, Pacific Tyre in Dededo is your place.
Grateful wife!

DeleteI would have to say you have a winner of a hubby. 😉
DeleteGo figure. I thought a pot hole or something would have even the issue. Well you aren't in MI any more. 😁. Glad that it was a screw, and I have been taught by my son Mike, who is a mechanic, how to use a plug kit to repair the tire. They work great, and you don't have to break down the tire. I am again amazed that you went to a NAPA Store. Go figure. 🤯 I noticed in the last picture, that there is a raised circle in the ceiling of the auto shop. What is up with that. Glad that Joan wasn't to far away. Great job Adam.
ReplyDeleteIt's where they beam up the aliens. :)
DeleteHaha Joan. Dave, I am not sure, but what I am seeing here on the ground is there is quite a bit of reuse of buildings as the economics ebb and flow. Building materials are hard to get, concrete not so much but steel is. Guamanians are very good at reuse, use what you have, don't fret about what you don't have.
DeleteRecycling mecca. No wonder Joan likes it there so much.
